Community invited to March on the Capitol for Voting Rights and Democracy

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission of Mid-Michigan Commemorates Legacy of 1963 March on Washington

LANSING, Mich. (July 28, 2026) — The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission of Mid-Michigan invites the public to participate in the 8.28 March on the Capitol for Voting Rights and Democracy Friday, Aug. 28, at 5:30 p.m. Beginning at the Lansing Center and concluding on the Michigan State Capitol lawn, participants will experience an evening of inspiration, education, and unity featuring community organizations, family activities, food trucks, live entertainment, educational resources, and voter-engagement opportunities.

Held on the anniversary of the historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, the event honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s enduring legacy while encouraging civic engagement, voter participation, and a renewed commitment to protecting democracy for future generations. The gathering is designed to remind us that democracy is strongest when communities come together, learn together, and actively participate in shaping the future through peaceful civic involvement.

“This march is both a remembrance and a call to action,” said Elaine J. Hardy, chairperson of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission of Mid-Michigan. “As we honor those who marched for justice in 1963, we also invite today’s generation to become informed, engaged, and committed to strengthening our democracy through civic participation.”

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

The award-winning Detroit Youth Choir will bring its powerhouse sound, youthful energy, and inspiring message to the Capitol lawn. Known nationally for unforgettable performances on America’s Got Talent, including their Golden Buzzer moment with “Can’t Hold Us” and their 2023 AGT: All-Stars performance of “Thunder,” the choir will help set a joyful, uplifting tone for an evening rooted in unity, civic engagement, and community pride.

DJ Zachary Clark will keep the evening moving with music that welcomes families, energizes participants, and creates a celebratory atmosphere from the march to the Capitol lawn.

VOTER EDUCATION & REGISTRATION

Connect with local clerks’ offices and community partners to learn about the power of your vote. Register, confirm your voter information, and make your voice heard. This hands-on voter education area is designed to help attendees understand and exercise their constitutional right to participate in democracy with confidence.
